Legalism Many people think of themselves as honest, upright citizens who obey the law and if the law says animal rights is illegal then they go against animal rights. This is legalism. Legalism says that the right moral action is what the law says you should do. The law may be the law of your country or the code of your society or group. According to the law of your country you must not cause animals 'unnecessary' suffering. But legalism could also hold that according to the law of your group or gang you should follow your leader and if he experiments on animals then you should support this, or at least not be obstructive. Legalism seems to be objective and clear but there are a number of criticisms that show its weaknesses:
